The 21st century has been a shining star for the New England Patriots on and off the field, with six titles spread out between 2001 and 2018 and the league’s second-best win percentage between 2014 and 2023 (alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers) at .632.

Still, even the NFL’s most successful franchises aren’t without warts, and the Patriots have shown theirs by struggling to land franchise-caliber players in the first round of the NFL Draft over the last 10 years. Although you have to guess those backing the Patriots in Massachusetts sports betting will happily take all those trophies over statistical victories in the draft.

Still, since 2014, New England has posted the NFL’s second-worst approximate value total in the first round, with 136 spread out across eight picks.

Utilizing Pro-Football-Reference.com, BetMassachusetts.com combined the total approximate value of the career of each NFL teams' 1st-round NFL draft picks from 2014 to 2023. The teams were then ranked on the average approximate value per pick to see what team has utilized their picks the best.

Patriots Among Worst in Getting 1st Round Value

The last 10 years have been very kind to the Pats franchise, wins-wise, but far less impactful on the draft front, as New England ranks behind Cincinnati, Green Bay and Philadelphia in first-round draft pick value.

The only franchise the Pats ranked ahead of is Seattle, which has gotten 110 AV from its seven first-round draft picks between 2014 and 2023, giving it the NFL’s worst AV per year average at 15.7.

Of the Pats’ last 10 first round picks, Malcolm Brown is the greatest success story, AV-wise, at 43. Mac Jones (24 AV), Isaiah Wynn (22 AV) and Sonny Michel (21 AV) are the only other New England draftees to notch 20 or more AV in their careers.

When broken down by raw AV totals alone, Baltimore (428 AV), Dallas (372 AV), the N.Y. Giants (340 AV), Cleveland (337 AV) and New Orleans (336 AV) are the NFL’s leaders.

BetMGM Massachusetts has the Patriots in a four-way tie with the Giants, Tennessee and Washington for the second-worst Super Bowl odds in the NFL at +15000.
