Patriots Backup Just Outside Top 10

The Patriots’ backup to starter Mac Jones is Bailey Zappe, in his second year out of Western Kentucky. Zappe tied for 11th in aggregate rank with Trevor Siemian of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Zappe tied for first in two categories (QB rating, TD %), tied for 19th with Sam Darnold of the San Francisco 49ers and Blaine Gabbert of the Kansas City Chiefs in INT % and tied for 27th with Jarrett Stidham of the Denver Broncos and Josh Dobbs of the Cleveland Browns in games started.

In four games (2-2 record) last season, Zappe completed 65 of 92 es (70.7% completion) for 781 yards with five TDs and 3 interceptions.

Zappe was a sparkplug for the Pats after Jones was injured last season. His running ability is an asset, but he needs more reps and experience.

We’ll get a better feel for the Patriots playoff odds when they host the defending NFC champion, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the season opener Sept. 10 (CBS, 4:25 p.m.).

Mass. Sportsbooks Eclipse $2 Billion Mark

In less than six months, the $2 billion mark in handle has been eclipsed by Massachusetts sports betting apps, online sites and retail sportsbooks. The mark was reached when the Massachusetts Gaming Commission released July numbers on Tuesday.
